Samuel Alexander Emery
1840 - 1920
Samuel Alexander Emery was born on 23 September, 1840, near Loveland, Ohio, the son of Elisha Jackson Emery and Eliza Van Horn Johnston.
Conrad Emery, Samuel's great-great grandfather, was born on or before 1709 and settled in Hunterdon County, New Jersy, before 1730. One of mother's ancestors was Frederick Fritts (b. 11 November 1731) who was an American patriot in the Revolutionary War.
Samuel enlisted in the 5th Ohio Cavalry and served as a teamster from November 5, 1861 to June 10, 1862. As the result of wounds received in the Battle of Pittsburg Landing in April of 1962, he was rendered permanently deaf. Nevertheless, on March 12, 1863, he enlisted in the Navy at Cincinnati and was discharged at Duvals Bluff on March 12, 1865.
On January 1, 1871, Samuel Emery was married at Goshen, Ohio, to Clara Smith. In September of that year they removed to Kansas and settled on a farm near Minneapolis in Ottawa Dounty. Clara died there in 1907. Samuel was remarried at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on 15 Octover 1907 to Rosa Chapman Jewett of Lindsey, Kansas. Samuel died 28 July, 1920 on his farm near Minneapolis and is buried in Highland Cemetery there.
