John Malnburg
1839 - 1924
John Malnburg was born in Sweden, probably in Lindkoping (?), on October 26, 1839. he came to American with his parents, living first in or near Oquawka, Henderson County, Illinois. John's father may have been named John S. (or Jonas) Malnburg (or Mallenberg). John's mother seems to have been Mary (1802 - 1887), buried in Red Oad, Ia.
In August of 1861, John enlisted in the Union Army, serving with Company E, 10th Regt., Illinois Infantry. He was mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 4, 1865. John's daughter, Nellie May, reports that John's company paraded up Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. and was reviewed by Abraham Lincoln.
After the war, John returned to Henderson Co., Illinois, then lived in Henry County, Iowa, before moving to Montgomery County, Iowa. On April 21 (or 22), 1872, John was married at Clarinda, Page Co., Iowa, to Mary Sophia Hagglund, daughter of Peter and Anne Hagglund. Before and following the Civil War, John's occupation was listed as a farmer. But before 1880, John had become a retail grocer in Red Oak, where he resided until his death on February 28, 1924, at age 84. He is buried in Red Oak, Iowa.
