Lucinda Jane McClelland
1848 - 1937

Lucinda Jane McClelland was born on February 16, 1848, in Sangamon Co., Illinois, the second eldest child of William and Margaret McClelland.

She was married on February 23, 1871, at Williamsville, illinois, to David F. Herst. They moved with the first three of their 7 children to Sumner Co., Kansas, in 1878, then finally to their permanent home near Freeport, Harper Co., Kansas. When an account they gave later, not a single tree broke the prairie landscape and there were occasional herds of buffalo.

The Children of David and Lucinda Jane were: William, Mary Porter, Nellie Foster, Pearl Luebke, Hardy, Olive R. Skipper and Ora Grace Herst.

David and Lucinda Jane Herst celebrated their 58th wedding anniversary in 1929. David preceded his wife in death, in 1929. Lucinda Jane died at her home near Freeport on May 29, 1937, at the age of 89. She is buried in the Argonia Cemetery, Sumner Co. Kansas.
