Newton Clyde Emery
1877 - 1959
Newton Clyde Emery was born on November 25, 1877, on the family farm near Minneapolis in Ottawa County, Kansas. He was the eldest son of Samuel Alexander Emery and Clara Smith Emery.
N.C. Emery, being the eldest son in the family, was able to attend school only in the early fall and in the spring. He obtained his county school completion certificate in the spring of 1898. He then obtained a diploma from the Kansas City Business College in 1899. He returned home to farm and was a deputy county treasurer in 1903 and 1904. In 1905, he began work in the Minneapolis National Bank, and was married to Elgiva Carter on April 4, 1906, at Minneapolis. While in Minneapolis, he served on the city council for a number of years.
In 1918, N.C. Emery moved to Tescott in Ottawa County, to be cashier of the Farmers State Bank. In 1929, he established an insurance and real estate agency in Tescott, which he owned until his death. He served 36 years as City Clerk of Tescott, two years as mayor, and on the school board for several terms. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 143 of Minneapolis.
He died on January 30, 1956, at Tescott, and is buried in Highland Cemetery in Minneapolis, Kansas.
