Elisha Jackson Emery
1814 - 1887

Elisha Jackson Emery was born on September 1, 1814, in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. He was the 7th of ten children of John Emery and Deborah (Waters) Emery.

In 1815, shortly after Elisha's birth, the Emery family moved to Miami Township in Clermont County, Ohio, near the town fo Loveland. Elisha's father ammassed considerable land in the community.

On December 18, 1836, Elisha was married to Eliza Van Horn Johnston of Clermont County. Elisha purchased 113 acres of land from his father in 1844. He was a practical farmer and very interested in horticultural practices. He also was a member of the Squirrel Hunters of Ohio, along with two brothers and three sons. This was a millitia organized to defend Ohioians from southern raiderrs in 1862. Morgan's Taiders went past Elisha's farm in 1863 and the family buried their valuables in the garden for safekeeping.

In 1873, after nearly 60 years in Ohio, Elisha and Eliza Emery moved to Seneca, Kansas. Elisha was instrumental in organizing the Bank of Nemaha County at Seneca, and he served as its president.

Elisha died at his home in Seneca on July 10, 1887, and he is buried in the cemetery at Seneca.
