Margaret Sayles

Margaret Sayles was born on August 10, 1829, in Sangamon County, Illinois, the daughter of Thomas Sayles and Jemima Brown.

Thomas Sayles came to Fancy Creek Township with his father, James Sayles, in 1819, from Kentucky. his wife, Jemima Brown, was born June 1, 1811, in Allen County., Kentucky, the daughter of Thomas Brown (born Feb. 4, 1792) and Martha Thaxton (born May 4, 1791), both originally from South Carolina.

Abraham Lincoln, future president of the United States, arrived in nearby New Salem, Illinois in 1831. It is published that the children of Thomas and Martha Brown "remember(ed) that the first corn Mr. Brown raised in the county for sale was hauled away by Abraham Lincoln, as the hired man of John Taylor who owed the land where they lived."
