Stephen Carter 1852 - 1939

& Esther Porter 1860 - 1910

Stephen Carter was born on December 13, 1852, at Mazomanie, Wisconsin. His parents, Johnathan Carter and Harriet Harrop Carter, came to Wisconsin from England in 1845, with a group of settlers under the direction of the British Temperance Emigration Society to log houses that had been built by the society. Stephen Carter removed to Minneapolis, Kansas, in 1875 at 22 years of age.

Esther Porter was born on April 15, 1860, at Marysville, Kansas. As a young child she moved with her parents, Charles and Laura Barbara Welhoff Porter, to St. Louis, and in 1867, to Minneapolis, Kansas.

Stephen and Esther were married on April 10,1879, at Minneapolis, Kansas. Five children were born of this union, including Elgiva Carter Emery. Stephen was a prominent farmer and stockman at Minneapolis during his lifetime.

Ester died on July 2, 1910, in Penn Valley Hospital in Kansas City, at age 50. Stephen was remarried to Eva McKee on February 15, 1912. He died at his home in Minneapolis on August 31, 1939. Both Stephen and Esther are buried in Highland Cemetery, at Minneapolis, Kansas.
