Clara Smith
1846 - 1907

Clara Smith was born near Goshen, Ohio, on October 1, 1846. Her parents were Samuel Covenhoven Smith and Louisa Bowlby. Her mother's ancestors include Captain Edward Cowell (born c. 1620) who was captain of horse in King Phillip's War in Massachusetts. He took part in the campaign at Quaboag (Brookfield) and at Sudbury. Another ancestor was Thomas Bowlby who was one of the prorietors of the West New Jersey colony. He owned an estimated 42,000 acres of land at the time of his death in 1731.

Clara Smith is said to have "made a profession of religion" before her marriage to Samuel Alexander Emery at Goshen, Ohio, on January 1, 1871. They removed to Kansas in September of that year, and settled on a farm 4 miles southwest of Minneapolis in Ottawa Count. Their eleven children were born there. Clara Smith Emery was active in the Relief Corps and the Presbyterian Church. She died on October 15, 1907, at Minneapolis, Kansas, at 61.

She is buried with her husband in the Highland Cemetery at Minneapolis.
